Byker and Ouseburn

The Byker Investment Task Group

The Byker Investment Task Group has been set up to look into options for future investment in the Byker estate. It reports to the Housing Minister, John Healey and its initial report will be ready by 31 January 2010. The Task Group is chaired by Professor Peter Roberts and members include representatives from all the key agencies involved in regeneration in Newcastle. Work has also started to produce a Regeneration Plan for Byker which will build on the work being carried out by the Task Group.

The Ouseburn barrage

The Ouseburn barrage prevents the low tide exposing mud, silt and debris in the lower reaches of the Ouseburn in order to create a more attractive waterfront. The barrage includes otter and swan friendly weir steps together with an eel pass. Floating islands have been positioned along the Ouseburn to allow otters to pass through and nesting boxes for kingfishers have been installed. The barrage is part of the ongoing development of the Ouseburn
