Elswick and Discovery Quarter is an area at the forefront of exciting change, with the development of the new Science Central. As well as new development, this area is also seeing improvements to existing properties, including Riverside Dene which dominates the skyline in this part of the West End.
Riverside Dene Work is now underway on the £31 million first phase of the redevelopment of Riverside Dene (formerly Cruddas Park). The Hawthorns, The Larches and The Sycamores are benefitting from external and internal improvements, with the flats being made available for rent through Your Homes Newcastle. The first three blocks are due for completion in spring 2010. It is the area’s biggest revamp since the towers were built in the 1960s, with double-height entrance halls, new landscaping and lighting features atop each of the blocks. In addition, every block will include space for community use, to be chosen by residents. Other key features include communal gardens and a wildlife corridor, while the project team are studying options for a green and more efficient heating system. The estate was renamed Riverside Dene in April 2009 following a resident vote. The name was unveiled in style from The Pines tower by abseilers from The Army while VIPs, residents and onlookers watched the display. The new name signals a new start for the area and complements the extensive revamp taking place.
Arthur’s Hill Renewal area Bishop’s Avenue in Elswick is the street of many colours afterevery house in the street was painted a vibrant colour as the latest part of the multi-million pound facelift project in Arthur’s Hill. Houses have also had their front doors fitted with new chrome letterboxes, numbers and door knockers, while railings have been smartened up with matching silver paint. Since 2006, the area renewal scheme – delivered by a partnership of Newcastle City Council, BNG and Centre West - has upgraded 564 houses in Arthur’s Hill, Elswick Triangle and Wingrove, with work progressing on properties on Wingrove Terraces & Dilston Road.
New Mills Ten new family homes have been created from old, unpopular flats as part of a conversion scheme in New Mills. The houses offer three good-size bedrooms, a large-living area and a private garden. All of the properties have been given extensive improvements both internally and externally. The homes attracted a lot of interest due to their affordable price, high quality work and good location close to the city centre.
