Croydon Road improvements

Elswick and Discovery Quarter is an area at the forefront of exciting change, with the development of the new Science Central. As well as new development, this area is also seeing improvements to existing properties, including Cruddas Park which dominates the skyline in this part of the West End.

Improving homes

• Plans for the £100m redevelopment of Cruddas Park are gathering pace. The six-year scheme will include internal improvements, a striking new look to the blocks and improvements to the surrounding area. The scheme will also bring a better choice in the size of the flats, as well as environmentally friendly measures to protect the environment and keep fuel bills low. Homes in five of the blocks will be made available for sale, whilst the five other blocks and Cruddas Park House will continue to be managed by Your Homes Newcastle. The scheme is backed by Newcastle City Council, Bridging NewcastleGateshead, Newcastle New Deal for Communities and Your Homes Newcastle, working with Gentoo and Bellway Homes.

• A renewal area was declared in Arthur’s Hill, Wingrove Terraces and the Elswick Triangle in April 2006. Work has begun on improvements to homes in Arthur’s Hill and Wingrove, with around 181 homes benefiting from a facelift in the first phase of work. The work is being delivered by Newcastle City Council supported by Bridging NewcastleGateshead and Newcastle New Deal for Communities. Croydon Road is the first street in the area to benefit from improvements which include new walls and railings. It is hoped that a total of around 2,500 properties will be transformed through the scheme.

Science Central
Bridging NewcastleGateshead bought 2.2 hectares of land on the Brewery Site in 2005 and has been working with Newcastle City Council to develop plans for new family housing in this area. The plans are also linked to the Science Central development with One NorthEast and Newcastle University.
