The West End of Newcastle is undergoing a transformation with a large number of new homes set to be built in the area and improvements being carried out to existing properties. These are exciting times for Benwell and Scotswood Neighbourhood management and property renovation have already benefited the area, and the plans for new homes, green spaces and services, will make this a truly great place to live.

A new Scotswood
Bridging NewcastleGateshead is working with Newcastle City Council and a number of other partners on a £450m project to bring around 1,800 new family homes as well as retail, commercial and community facilities and improved public parks to a 65 hectare site in Scotswood. The new development will follow interesting and innovative design, and all the properties will be built to high environmental standards. Three developers have now been shortlisted to deliver the project, with the successful partner set to be selected in autumn 2008.
To complement the redevelopment, an exciting programme of cultural events and activities will take place.

Improving homes

• Homes in the area are also benefiting from improvements. Facelift treatment to improve the appearance of 132 properties in Scotswood Village is now complete. Improvements to 98 properties in the Bishop’s Road area of Benwell have also recently been completed.

• Work, which includes improvements to roofs, walls, doors and windows, has also taken place in Derwent Street, Sandhoe Gardens and Axwell Park View.  The final phase of the scheme is now underway, currently improving properties along Delaval Road.

• A number of properties in North Benwell have benefited from a Homes First scheme. Through the scheme, which has been delivered by Home Group, run-down flats have been converted into family homes for affordable sale.

Neighbourhood Management
BNG also supports neighbourhood management in Scotswood and Benwell.

• In Scotswood, a Neighbourhood Manager and four wardens, manage the neighbourhood through the ongoing regeneration work.

• The Benwell Neighbourhood Management Initiative is led by Home Group and supported by Newcastle City Council, to provide better services in the area by working closely with lots of different agencies.
